Air BNB Do/Dont’s

Upon entrance to an air bnb, it should be clean. No matter what your reason for being there.

I went on a business / vacation trip to the wonderfully hot, playground of LasVegas. I also celebrated my birthday while I was there, which made this the most perfect time to go. I decided to take my bestie, daughters, sisters and nieces with me.

After arriving from the airport, we had the most difficult time getting our rental car that I scheduled months ahead of time. It was a nightmare. But it all worked out and I we were on our way to the AIRBNB

Upon arrival to the AIR BNB we were excited to get in, unpack, and take a swim.

Well this is where things started to unravel.

  1. The floor was dirty

  2. There were dirty dishes in the cabinets

  3. No dressers to unpack our clothes

  4. Only a few hangers to hang our clothing

  5. And a dirty swimming pool with dog toys inside.

  6. Rug had not been vacuumed

  7. Dirty window sills with dead bugs, and lots of dust

  8. No cleaning products such as mop, towels, cleaning supplies

  9. Drink rings on the nightstands

  10. Unplugged lamps

  11. Dust on the ceiling fans

  12. Dirty bedding

  13. Some of the beds were rickety

  14. Broken back door locks

The house had hardwood floors up stairs and down stairs. The kitchen, and bathrooms were all tile flooring. There are very high ceilings so the sound traveled through the house with a minor sneeze. There was no way to be quite in the morning for a cup of coffee and whispers with others who are also early risers. The entire house would wake up with merely making a cup of coffee.

Most AIR BNB host know this but I will share my advice as a designer and a patron.

  1. Clean the house no matter who’s renting it or for whatever reason. (The cleaner said nobody usually cares because they’re here to party not relax)

  2. When I’m on vacation, I like to unpack. My dresses need to relax, my undies in a drawer. I do not want to live out of my suitcase for a week. Purchase a dresser even if you have to get commercial grade pieces

  3. Wash the bedding all of it. Check the mattress covers for visual stains, if you see any, wash it. The mattress covers should be washed weekly. People have sex in the beds and it’s good to have fresh bedding. Fresh bedding and comfortable mattresses are great word to mouth selling points

  4. Invest in pillows every six months or so

  5. Clean the pool if your selling point is the pool. Not everyone wants to swim in dog hair, with dog toys. Think of allergic reactions for dust and animal hair

  6. Clean vents and furnaces to keep the house safe with clean air flow

  7. Make sure the trash is not piled up on the side of the house when new guest arrive. This can promote unwanted critters that I’m sure the neighbors will not appreciate as well

  8. This could be a headache but it’s something to consider, get area rugs if you have hardwood floors. It sections off the spaces, helps with noise control, and keeps the rooms in proper temperatures

  9. Purchase drapery, again, it controls sound, temperatures, and it’s aesthetically pleasing

  10. Make sure your guest are safe. Safety helps guest relax more and enjoy their time in your home

  11. Furniture should be sturdy and safe to sit or lay on

  12. Extra blankets should be put in bags, to keep them fresh. If they’re out of the bags, they were used and need to be washed

It is ok to purchase commercial grade furniture to make sure your items last for multiple use over years with multiple body types, shapes, and sizes.

Or

Create a disclaimer on the Air BNB website warning people that your vacation home is strictly for those who want to party, not relax.
